A night that is only free tickets does not need Connect turned on.
Separate from paid checkout
A cart is paid or free. Complimentary tickets are claimed on their own, not mixed into a charge.

The guest opens the event, chooses the complimentary tier, and claims it without a card. They leave with a pass.
Slots still count
A free tier can have a quantity. When those slots are gone, the claim stops, the same way a paid tier sells out.
Separate from a paid cart
A checkout is paid or free, not both. An event that is only complimentary does not need Stripe Connect turned on.
